Gamplüt Gondola Lift Powered by Wind and Solar Energy The Gamplüt gondola lift runs on solar power. The hot water used in the Gamplüt mountain restaurant comes from solar panels and the warm-air fireplace in the main hall. When the sun isn't shining, the wind blows. Therefore, a wind turbine generates additional electricity. For us, investing in sustainable energy is a matter of course; we care deeply about the location and nature. World's First Wind and Solar Cable Car in Toggenburg The world's only fully solar-powered gondola lift (as of 2012) is located in the Upper Toggenburg region. It connects Wildhaus with the Gamplüt alpine pasture. The lift's maximum speed is 19.8 km/h. The photovoltaic systems on the roof of the mountain restaurant and the machine hall generate approximately the same amount of electricity as the lift consumes. Schönenbodensee, Wildhaus The Schönenbodensee is located to the east of the village of Wildhaus in the municipality of Wildhaus-Alt St. Johann in a hollow in a protected fen area at the southern foot of the Gulmen. Like the Schwendisee on the opposite side of the village, the lake was formed around 14,000 years ago after a glacier melted. In the millennia that followed, the moors gradually formed as the lake shores silted up. The lake is fed on the one hand by a small stream that flows into the lake on the east side, and on the other hand, meltwater and rainwater penetrates underground through the limestone layers of the Gulmen into the lake. This constantly refreshes the moor water. The small Simmi stream leaves the Schönenbodensee in the west, turns east and flows into the Werdenberg inland canal east of Gams. You can swim in the Schönenbodensee: Since 1930 there has been a supervised bathing establishment with a jetty, food and pedal boat rental. The production costs amounted to 50,000 francs. Zwingli's birthplace, Wildhaus As a witness to a time long past, this house stands in the middle of the Lisighus district of Wildhaus. It was built in the middle of the 15th century by the reformer's grandfather. Despite various changes, the basic structure has been preserved to this day. Inside the house, numerous remarkable details can be discovered, such as the late Gothic carved beamed ceiling in the living room (which was also used as an office), the open fireplace in the kitchen or an original offertory box from the Grossmünster in Zurich. The Zwingli House now belongs to the Evangelical Church of the Canton of St. Gallen, which keeps it open to guests from all over the world.
