The castle is located on the basalt field of the old volcano of Craux and dominates the valleys of Volane and Sandron. The castle was built in the 11th century as a hunting lodge. It was occupied for the last time in 1944 before being bought by the municipality in 1994 and restored.

Nice view of the top of Montivernoux. The trail up to the summit is unpaved and only doable on foot or with an MTB.

Just around the corner of a house on the north side of the road. This tap provides fresh drinking water. Excellent point to refill your water bottles after the climb up to the plateau.

Nice crossing point in the middle of the ruins. The Grande Porte farm is a good restaurant/refreshment point with a lovely view overlooking the abbey. There is also a water point within the abbey to fill the gourds.

Mont Gerber de Jonc is another volcanic sugar loaf dome. A little busy and touristy, but you can fill your water bottle from the source of the Loire river, the longest river in France, which is pretty darn cool! If you want to lock up your bike, you can take a short 20-minute hike to the summit for amazing views.
