Beautiful historic town center, worth a detour.

From every angle, the Philippsthal potash mine's spoil heap is a fantastic photo opportunity. Depending on the depth and layer from which the spoil reaches the heap, it displays different colors. The eastern edge of the heap lies directly on the former border with the GDR. A former border security watchtower can also be seen there.

Vacha a place with German history

Wendelstein Castle first appears in the chronicles in 1294 and was part of the town fortifications around Vacha and served to protect the trade route over the Werra. The castle now houses a regional museum that is well worth seeing, which focuses specifically on the history and crafts of Vacha and displays many exhibits from local businesses. Another highlight is the doll exhibition, mainly from the collection of Elenor Fischer, who bequeathed almost 2000 dolls to the museum. You can also climb the keep and enjoy the view of Vacha.

Landgrave Philipp of Hesse-Philippsthal had a castle built in 1685. It was built in the town of Kreuzberg, which he renamed to suit his castle. Philippsthal Castle was built from the remains of a former monastery, which were integrated into the buildings. The castle is now used for various private purposes and as a town hall. There is a nursing home here, among other things. You are only allowed to cross the courtyard, but not to visit the interior.
