A newspaper article from 1822 mentions Modenwitz as the birthplace of Katharina von Bora. Although the origins of Martin Luther's future wife remain unclear to this day, the report can be relegated to the realm of legend. However, it is possible that Luther stayed in Moderwitz. His father-in-law, Hans von Bora, is said to have lived with the Hayn family in Moderwitz as late as 1542. The descendants of Lucas Cranach the Elder (best man of Martin Luther and Katharina von Bora) also maintained connections to the Moderwitz manor.
