In the second half of the 17th century, the district Vegesack and its port developed into a base for whaling in the Arctic. As early as 1653, a Bremen Greenland company had been founded for this purpose. In 1830, the shipyard owner Johann Lange established a new whaling fleet and in 1843 a joint stock company "... for the purpose of Greenland fishing ..." was founded in Vegesack. After short-term activities in the South Seas whaling in the Arctic was still operated until 1872 and then discontinued, however, since with the advent of petroleum as a fuel, the tran extraction of whales had become unprofitable. The tradition of Vegesack as a "whaling town" is still reminiscent of various monuments in the city, such as the bronze whale in the pedestrian zone or whale jetty and Walfluke on Utkiek near the harbor entrance.
