The Great Seeloch is located in the southern Harz foreland on the Seeberg south of Hochstedt and only a few kilometers west of Nordhausen. It is the largest and easternmost of three lying in east-west direction Erdfälle. In contrast to the other two - the small sea hole and the moss hole - the big sea hole is constantly filled with water. This fall is one of the typical karst phenomena. It originated a long time ago due to the leaching of the deep underground and the subsequent collapse of the cover rock.
The almost circular Erdfall has a diameter of about 190 and the lake located therein of about 120 meters. This covers an area of approximately 1.5 hectares. The precipitous shore typical of earthquakes is surrounded by a narrow but dense forest strip and thus protected from outside views. Numerous folk tales are associated with the emergence of the Great Sea Hole and its two smaller "siblings".
The Great Seeloch today represents a picturesque and calm lake with a rich variety of animal and plant life dar. It has no inflow or outflow and no connection to the groundwater. Its water depth is estimated at 17 to 24 meters. A narrow path leads around the Erdfallsee near the shore.

The water is an idyllic spot earth and well suited for rest and pause. Because bathing and fishing in the lake as well as camping on the shore are officially forbidden, you can listen to the sounds of nature in general undisturbed at the Großer Seeloch.
