The Rednitz is the 46 km long left or south source of the river Regnitz in Franconia. Somewhat more abundant than the other source river Pegnitz and also richer in tributaries, it is considered hydrographically as the upper reaches of the Regnitz, although the longest flow path in their system is more than 20 km shorter than that in the system of the PegnitzIn written sources, the river first appears in the 8th century under the Latin name Radantia. In the 11th century, the name of the river is reproduced with RatenzaThe river is created in Georgensgmünd in the district of Roth at 342 m above sea level. NHN by the union of Franconian and Swabian Rezat.From there, the Rednitz flows north over Roth, Büchenbach, Rednitzhembach, Penzendorf and Schwabach. Characteristic of the old cultural landscape are the numerous old mills, especially in the upper section to Roth, often today only residential or small industrial enterprises.For Nuremberg, the Rednitz forms apart from the statistical district 551 with the districts Mühlhof and Lohhof about the western boundary of the urban area and touches the western neighboring communities stone, Oberasbach and Zirndorf.
