On December 5, 1901, the Christ Church was inaugurated on Schreiner's property on Grifflenberg by General Superintendent D. Umbeck. The first groundbreaking took place in 1898 on the property donated by the Schreiner family on Grifflenberg. On May 15, 1899, the foundation stone could be laid, the inscription of which from Hebrews 13, verse 8 refers to the foundation of the church and congregation: "Jesus Christ, yesterday and today and the same forever". The architect of the Christ Church was the government architect Plange. The building was oriented to the east to the rising Easter sun, it was in the shape of a cross and was built in the neo-renaissance style from white Belgian limestone. The arrangement of the altar, pulpit and organ on the front of the church was typical of churches of that time. The tower of the Christ Church contained three bells then, as it does today, but the fourth bell, the clock bell, is missing. The organ was built by the Walcker company. It had 41 registers. A total of 1300 people found space in the old Christ Church. In the so-called Elberfeld attack on the night of June 24th to 25th, 1943, the Christ Church was partially destroyed. The roof was partially covered, the windows destroyed, but the church could have been preserved. After the war it was released for the reconstruction of the almost completely destroyed Südstadt, and so the shortage of materials after the war made it a ruin. Anyone who still knows the old Christ Church mourns this magnificent and beautiful church, but thanks to the courageous decision of the presbytery to allow the residents to pick it up, the hardship of the people of the south of the city was alleviated.Source: suedstadtweb.de/gemeinde/christuskirche.html
