Colliery Zollverein shaft 1/2The excavation work for pit 1 of the Zollverein colliery began on February 18, 1847. Coal mining only started in 1851 due to flooding.
In order to regulate the water inflows at the shaft 1, another shaft, shaft 2, was drilled in 1850 next to shaft 1, which was put into operation in 1852. For the first time, two external Malakow towers were erected above the shafts as a conveyor system. Shaft 2 received in 1964 the previously dismantled winding tower of shaft 2 of the disused colliery Peaceful neighbor, Bochum-Linden, as a new conveyor system. Still today, shaft 2 is used for drainage.
