Here you can save yourself a traffic light if you drive next to the tower directly on the dike to the Elbe bridges.

From 1939 to 1941 a total of eleven "Zombeck" type air raid shelters were built in Hamburg, nine of which still exist today. These towers are mostly located near transport hubs such as S-Bahn stations and road bridges.
Each Zombeck tower was designed for 600 people; in fact, they offered space for over 1000 people during the bombing raids on Hamburg.

The round bunkers were adapted to the Hamburg cityscape by cladding them with local clinker bricks. Due to a lack of material and labor and limited transport capacities, not all air raid shelters in Hamburg could be clad with the local red bricks.

Five of the Zombeck towers are listed today: the round bunker on the Moorweide at the Dammtor, the one at the Barmbek train station, the two in the north of the Veddel (not far from the Elbe bridges) and the bunker in front. The bog pasture bunker, which now houses a bar, is particularly richly decorated. The other four surviving round bunkers are located west of Rothenburgsort on Billhorner Brückenstraße and at the train stations Berliner Tor, Sternschanze (sports grounds in Sternschanzenpark) and Hasselbrook.

The two demolished round bunkers were located next to the Museum of Arts and Crafts at the main train station (demolished in 2002 as part of the expansion of the bus station) and on today's Ottenser Hauptstraße (demolished in 1951, now the Mercado shopping center).

A twelfth Hamburg round bunker was located in the port west of Rosshafen. This ring staircase tower was the only one of its kind in Hamburg and was built as a security room for the Howaldtswerke. It was demolished in 2009.

One of the 9 remaining Zombeck towers that were used as a Zombeck air defense tower during World War II. In 1937 the designer Paul Zombeck patented the type of round tower named after him.
