The Elsava is a 25 km long river which has its source northeast of Hessental and flows at Obernburg - Elsenfeld into the Main.

The original name Elsapha comes from the Old High German word Els for alder and the Indo-European word Ap - meaning water. As an explanation, this results in "a stream of alders passed by alders". The river gave the municipality Elsenfeld her name
