The Friedberg district of Ockstadt is known far beyond the borders of the region for its cherries. This is certainly also due to the 42,000 cherry trees that are shared by around 500 owners, although most of them only have a few trees. Around 50 Ockstadt cherry farmers still operate the classic sideline fruit cultivation.

The professionalization of sweet cherry cultivation in Ockstadt is closely linked to the American Declaration of Independence. With the independence of the United States from Great Britain, the supply of cotton had collapsed. This meant that an important branch of the economy in the Wetterau, namely the processing of cotton, was lost and new sources of income had to be found.

Up until the 1960s, mainly tall cherry trees were planted. These trees, up to ten meters high, were difficult to harvest, but you could drive carts under the trees and use every square meter of soil.
