Fortress Fort HermannTo the building complex of the lock Flitsch belongs also the upper fortress Fort Hermann, which is on a rock slope of the Rombongebirges. It was built by the Austrians in the years 1897-1900. In comparison with the lower fortress, this was more modern for the time. Their task was to control the Bovec basin and to ensure artillery surveillance. First it was named Rombon and later only Fort Hermann, after Johann Hermann von Hermannsdorf. He was the Austrian commander of the fortress on the Predel, which fell in 1809 with almost its entire crew in the fighting with the French. According to the builders' estimates at the time, the building should be strong enough to withstand the impact of the strongest shells. Until the First World War, the fortress was modernized several times. Between both fortresses a short connection was made of iron wedges. The wedges are in poor shape today.Right at the beginning of the fighting on the Isonzo front in May 1915, the Italian artillery shelled the fortress and later completely destroyed it. Therefore, the Austro-Hungarian soldiers left in May 1916 the Fort Hermann.Sea level: 650 m
