Somewhat hidden behind the many historical buildings of the main market and, for many visitors, a bit in the shadow of the cathedral, St. Gangolf with its special tower architecture is one of the many impressive churches in Trier.

St. Gangolf is Trier's market church. Impressively located on the south side of the beautiful urban ensemble of the main market, it looks back on over 1000 years of history. The establishment is probably connected with the establishment of the market cross in 958 under Archbishop Heinrich (956-964).

Places of power as a sign of his closeness
Our ancestors erected them as a reminder of God's actions, as thanks for answers and help in times of need. As a place where people can feel his closeness, as a space in which people experience protection.
Now we are here, at the place of remembrance, asking for blessings. At the place of prayer where requests have been answered, at the crossroads where people found protection and help.
So let us not walk away without professing our trust in God's help. We want to ask God's blessing in prayer, give thanks to God for his love, entrust our bondage to Jesus on the cross and ask the Holy Spirit for help on our way.

St. Gangolf is the market and city church of Trier, dedicated to St. Gangolf. After Trier Cathedral, it is the oldest church building in the city. It is behind a row of houses south of the main market. The first market church erected in 958 was replaced by a new building between 1284 and 1344. Today's late Gothic building emerged from a renovation that began around 1500. Baroque elements were added in 1731 and 1746. The painting on the altar wall by August Gustav Lasinsky dates from the 19th century and is the most important monument of Nazarene art in Trier. In 1966, the stained glass windows by Charles Crodel brought together the elements of the different epochs in an overall picture. The church has always been almost completely surrounded by houses and only the east side almost borders on a street (Grabenstraße), but even here there are low shops at ground level, popularly known as "Gädemcher", in front of them.
