Bike Touring Highlight
The Wittmoor is a paradise for cyclists, walkers and nature lovers. Bog, heath, forests and pastures are well developed with hiking trails. An insider tip all year round. Not recommended after long rain. The Wittmoor nature reserve is the last raised bog in northern Hamburg. It was created in millennia in a valley of glacial moraines in a side valley of the Alster and was pilled until 1958. Part of the bog has been preserved. In 1978 the Wittmoor was placed under nature protection. Drainage ditches have been closed again and two raised bog lakes have meanwhile been created in the middle of the peaty area. The peaty areas are now wet again and the dying birches in the area are signs of new moor formation. The Wittmoor nature reserve is an insider tip all year round. There you can cycle, hike and enjoy nature in peace. The area should only be avoided after long rains. Then you can no longer come across your feet dry. The hiker should bring his own food. There are no cafes or restaurants along the way for a stopover. A picnic in the bog also sounds tempting.hamburg.de/wandern-ausflug-hamburg/296582/wandern-wittmoor
