The Zittenfeld Spring in the Odenwald is considered one of the possible locations in the Siegfried legend from the Nibelungenlied, where Hagen treacherously slew the hero. Whether the event actually took place here or at one of the region's other springs remains uncertain.

What is certain, however, is that the spring itself has an ancient history: Its water springs from layers of red sandstone, which formed around 246 million years ago in the Mesozoic era and today cascades down the rock face, sometimes with more, sometimes with less water.
