The body of water is the largest of its kind in the area. Around 300 different bird species stop here on their southward migration. The Gasthaus am See and the opposite Eiscafé Elsner invite you to linger. There is also a parking lot directly at the lake, where campers are also allowed to park.

The Hainspitzer See is one of the largest natural lakes in Thuringia.

The late medieval moated castle Hainspitz was located on the south bank of the lake. After the settlement of Hainspitz, members of a ministerial family called the Wettins. They were mentioned in a document as early as 1132. Even in the Saxon Civil War in 1450, the moated castle was provided with an occupation. During the Thirty Years War it burned down after being looted and fell into disrepair after being neglected.

Today only a flat hill and parts of the moat on the peninsula in the lake are left.
