    The Elephant Tusks (Pembe Za Ndovu) drive-thru gate was originally constructed around the 1950's when the Royal family of England came to visit Kenya/Mombasa. The residents of Mombasa decided to put up a structure in form of tusks to beautify the road where the British Queen would pass as she went to the yatching club. The idea was to pull down the structures after Queen Elizabeth exited the country, but the structures became so popular that residents and tourist thronged the place to take pictures and most tour companies and business people started associating themselves with the tusks. So the Mombasa municipality constructed something that will last.
    They are made of aluminum and they have been standing at Moi avenue since 1994, forming an M-like symbol that is the first letter of the word Mombasa.
