Battle of the Old Veste: The ridge around the castle ruins was in 1632 during the Thirty Years' War for several days the scene of a battle between the imperial loyal troops under Wallenstein and the Swedish troops under King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden. The Swedish troops, who camped in Nuremberg, attacked the positions of Wallenstein in Zirndorf and the surrounding area from the east. Wallenstein had set up and secured a huge camp in the west of Nuremberg with more than 50,000 mercenaries and a pack of horses. After two days of heavy fighting with many dead on both sides, the battle was broken off by the Swedes. According to historians, Wallenstein had ended the battle with benefits for his side. The so far victorious Swedes could not win the battle even there in Nuremberg, where they found much support.Source and further information: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alte_Veste
