The Rurstausee is located in the city region of Aachen and the circle Düren am Kermeter between the Heimbacher district Hasenfeld in the northeast, the Nideggener district Schmidt and the Simmerather community part Rurberg in the southwest. Villages from which access to the reservoir is possible are Heimbach, Rurberg (Obersee), Schmidt-Eschauel, Schwammenauel and Woffelsbach (sorted alphabetically). The Rurstausee is reached at congestion target (full congestion) about 10.6 Rurflusskilometer (at about 5 km as the crow flies between lake-end and dam) long. Then it has about 7.83 km ² total area and 203.2 million m³ of storage space. The congestion root of the water body is - above the Obersee - 24 km away from the Rurtalsperre Schwammenauel. At the southwest end of the Rurstausees borders directly the dam Eiserbach, which dammed the Rurstausee tributary Eiserbach to the reservoir Eiserbach, and at its southern end directly the Paulushofdamm, which dammed the Rur and Urft to the reservoir Obersee.Special features of the Rurstausees are the island of Eichert, the peninsula on Tonsberg and the peninsula Eschauel (with the same name beach), which can be reached on foot, depending on the water level. The wooded island Eichert rises as a foothills of the peninsula on Tonsberg with its highest point (about 318 m above NHN ) about 36.5 m on the dam (281.5 m) of the Rurstausees. About 500 m southwest of this island is located in a full meter a few meters high and measured along its center line about 100 m long island, which is an extension of the Eschauel peninsula. On the peninsula at 333.3 m high Tonsberg is a castle deserted (cultural monument). By 1959 completed dam increase the storage space of formerly about 101 million m³ grew by 101.6 million m³ to the present 202.6 million m³ .Source Wikipedia
