The Johannbau in Dessau, built between 1528 and 1533 on the foundations of a medieval predecessor, was the west wing of the former residential palace of the princes and dukes of Anhalt-Dessau. It is one of the most important palace buildings of the early Renaissance in Central Germany. The initiator of its construction was Prince Johann IV of Anhalt, supported by his brothers Georg III and Joachim. For a long time, Ludwig Binder was considered the sole architect, but recent research indicates a collaboration with his father Bastian Binder. After severe damage during the Second World War, the Johannbau was extensively restored between 1990 and 2005. Since then, it has housed the Dessau Museum of City History, which presents the approximately 800-year history of the city and region on three floors.
