The dune landscape in Bergen on the Maas not far from the German-Dutch border has rightly been placed under special protection and declared National Park De Maasduinen. This beautiful national park with the longest river dune landscape in Europe cuts through the municipality of Bergen on a length of about 23 kilometers in a north-south orientation. With an average width of 2 kilometers it thus covers an area of approximately 46 square kilometers. This also means that about half of the Bergen municipal area is under special protection. In numerous ways one can cross, discover and enjoy the unique landscape of the national park. It is composed not only of parabolic dunes, but also of wet meadows, forests, lakes and moorland, pasture and heathland. Starting points for an extended hike through the national park can be, for example, the Restaurant De Wellsche Hut directly on the German-Dutch border, the receiving station Jachthut Op den Hamer in Wellerlooi or the visitor center De Maasduinen in Well. The opening times of these visitor centers and further information about the park can be found on the official site, which also has a German-language
