If you are walking in Hees on a sunny day and suddenly see lights shining on the tower of the old church, you do not have to be scared or think of a miracle. This is a historically inspired work of art.

It consists of a total of 24 hand axes made of crystal that hang on the facades of the church tower. If you go up the steps to the door of the old church, right next to the rectory, you can see some of them better and read more about them.

Why hand axes? Because traces of Neanderthal hunting camps were discovered a short distance from here. You can even visit this archaeological site: komoot.com/nl-nl/highlight/7405398

And why are the teardrop-shaped stones by Hans Lemmen called Neander tears? That has to do with primitive man, the arrival of Homo Sapiens and Christian mythology as you can read on the information board (see also the photos).

The stones are hanging on the facades of the church tower but for me they are a highlight as a work of art in themselves. By the way: the walker who chats with fellow walkers would walk right past it and not everyone climbs every step they encounter :)
