The Cologne Rheinauhafen lost its function as a Rhine port due to the depopulation of the port facilities and other competing Cologne ports. Therefore, the City Council of Cologne decided on 13 July 1976, the conversion of the port area into a "recreational and recreational facility." This included the renovation of partially listed old harbor structures, but also the construction of residential and commercial buildings. The latter category included the buildings designed by the Aachen architect Alfons Linster and the Hamburg architectural office Bothe, Richter, Teherani (BRT), whose form (an inverted L) modeled three harbor cranes with outriggers towards the Rhine. In the copyright dispute between the Hamburg architectural office and Linster, the Federal Court had decided on 26 February 2009, that the defendant Alfons Linster is to be regarded as co-author of the Kranhäuser of the "workshop draft" according to § 10 Abs. 1 UrhG. The property area belonging to the Ports and Freight Cologne was acquired by private investors in November 2006 for the purpose of constructing the crane houses.
