With a useful length of 250 meters and a width of 25 meters, the Geesthacht lock was built in 1957 to ensure a uniform draft between the Lower and Upper Elbe. So that the larger ships can pass between the Lower and Upper Elbe, the Niederelbe was dredged to a depth of 12 meters. However, the water level of the Upper Elbe was not allowed to become too shallow and the water table of the Elbmarsch did not sink.
Since then, the lock with the lock channel of shipping has made it possible to overcome the gradient created by the weir. The barrage lifts the Elbe mirror up to two meters above the previous mean water level.
From here and the Elbe bridge you have excellent views of the busy traffic and the impressive technology of the lock. Not far from the lock is the barrage with the largest fish ladder in Europe. Again, you have a good overview of the Elbe bridge. The lock is among other technical attractions part of the technical tour in Geesthacht. By bike you can go on an exciting discovery tour of Geesthacht technical and industrial attractions.
