The only surviving element of the oldest convent complex of Partanna is the tall soaring bell tower, now isolated, which serves as a clock tower; it was added in 1650, almost two centuries after the church of Santa Maria della Catena extra moenia was entrusted to the Franciscans (1484), next to which the friars had built their convent in 1523. Of the church which was renovated in the 18th century (1765), after the demolition in 1968, there remain pieces of stucco walls and part of the apse area.
The bell tower houses the statues of Saint Francis of Assisi and the Immaculate Conception in two eighteenth-century niches. The pyramidal spire was rebuilt in the 1990s.
