The striking red Willemsbrug (1981) over the Nieuwe Maas connects the city centre with the Noordereiland. The on and off ramps of the bridge make a somewhat strange ninety-degree bend. This was chosen under pressure from local residents to prevent traffic congestion through the historic Oude Haven and Oranjeboomstraat. In 1983, the bridge received the National Steel Prize.
This Willemsbrug is the second Willemsbrug. The first bridge (1878) played an important role during the Second World War. Marines from the Marine Barracks on the Oostplein defended the bridge so well during the German invasion on 10 May 1940 that the Germans did not cross the bridge.
