The Basel Gate probably dates from the 14th century and secured access from the south until the mid-19th century. The name was given to the gate, because it was access to the post and army road to Basel, the Margraves had there an alternative location (city palace).

The tower at the Basel Gate is the last remaining tower of the Durlacher city wall. Normally it is not accessible, but it is regularly open to visitors on the day of the open monument.
