Basalt was mined in the 143-hectare local recreation area "Dietesheim Steinbrecher" until 1982. After basalt mining stopped, the groundwater rose and over the years formed an attractive lake landscape, for the recultivation of which around 120,000 trees and 7,000 bushes were planted. The two largest lakes in the area , the Vogelsberger and the Oberwaldsee, which has been a nature reserve since 1989, are connected by a small, approximately 12 meter high canyon. This still bears witness to the history of its origins and has matured through natural development into an important biotope. The landscape consists of , and nature reserve area offers a variety of habitats for flora and fauna. Among other things, rare amphibian, reptile and insect species find a suitable retreat. Three circular paths lead through this unique landscape and guide visitors to attractive viewing points that offer impressive perspectives on bizarre Reveal rock formations. The “Dietesheim quarries” are a popular destination for relaxation and at the same time offer a valuable space for nature.
