The building of the church is documented in 1186, but this certainly as a new building after the destruction of the old city church by the turmoil of war under Heinrich d. Löwen 1179. The patronage of St. Martin goes back to the French influence in the Middle Ages.

Saint Martin, to whom the church in Halberstadt is consecrated, is - next to Saint Nicholas - probably one of the most popular saints of all. The memorial day of the former officer in the Roman army is November 11th. On the night after the famous “coat sharing”, when he surrendered half his army cloak to a freezing beggar, Jesus Christ appears to him in a dream. He then converted to Christianity and was later - initially against his will - elected Bishop of Tours (France).
Many should have fond childhood memories of lantern handicrafts in kindergarten and elementary school, the evening lantern parade through the dark village / district - and of course of the delicious “Weckmann”.

From the outside, the church looks very neat, but inside there is still a lot of work to do to restore it.

The Martini Towers are very imposing and are directly opposite the Halberstadt Cathedral. A trip to Halberstadt is definitely worth it. In summer just as in winter, there is always something new to discover.
