The attentive observer can still see some traces of Jewish life in the old town of Halberstadt. The former rabbinical seminar with the associated clause synagogue and the community mikwe, a ritual bath for spiritual purification, survived unscathed. The ornate baroque gravestones on the oldest of the three Jewish cemeteries in Halberstadt still testify to the importance of the community and its members at that time. Few remains of the once imposing baroque synagogue are hidden behind the Hebrew characters of the Hirsch café and restaurant.
