The Geesthacht pump storage facility near Geesthacht on the Elbe serves to quickly cover the electricity demand at peak load times and as an emergency reserve during power outages to enable other power plants to reboot. The pumped storage power plant was put into operation on 15 October 1958 and it is the largest of its kind in northern Germany. Here at this point you have a wonderful view of the 3 downpipes of the power plant, which have a drop height of about 83 m.
