The Willigisbrücke is a bridge in Aschaffenburg, which crosses the Main there. It connects the districts Leider u. Nilkheim with the district Stadtmitte / Innenstadt. 🚴♂️In 989, the archbishop of Mainz, Willigis, built a wooden bridge over the river at the present Willigis bridge. At that time, it was the only bridge between Frankfurt and Würzburg. A heavy ice drift destroyed the first bridge and as a replacement a stone arch bridge was erected. This bridge had two bridge towers. The rechtsmainische bridge tower was canceled in 1771 and the left Main 1780. In the course of the expansion of the port, the bridge was replaced after 1889 by a new building, which in turn was severely damaged in the spring of 1945 by acts of war. The present bridge is a postwar building. The predecessor building did not survive the Second World War. The new construction of the bridge was released in 1969. According to legend, in November 1631, at the end of the Thirty Years' War, Father Bernhard von Trier on the bridge successfully asked the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf to spare the city and its citizens. The gangway has a single track lane in each direction and has a separate combined walking and cycling path on both sides• Name: Willigis Bridge
