The water tower is the landmark of Mannheim. Built in 1889 by the Stuttgart architect Gustav Halmhuber, who also participated in the construction of the Berlin Reichstag. As the centerpiece of the central drinking water supply, it was in operation until the year 2000. The water tower is 60 meters high, has a diameter of 19 meters and holds 2000 cubic meters of water. The roof of the tower crowns a statue of Amphitrite, the wife of the god of the sea, Poseidon. Also the further picture decoration and the figures at the small and the large basin take up this topic: Water is life and - particularly for Mannheim - the basis for navigation and trade. 🚴♂️
The water tower rises at the highest point of Friedrichsplatz. With its ensemble of tower, garden, water basin and the adjoining festival hall and the Kunsthalle, the Friedrichsplatz is considered one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau in Germany. At dawn, the brightly lit water features create a very special atmosphere. 🚴mannheim.de/de/kultur-erleben/kulturdenkmale/wasserturm
