The Lottental pond is fed by the Lottenbach. This rises in the Wiemelhausen district of Bochum and flows into Lake Kemnade after 3.8 kilometres. The Lottental is bordered by a beautiful mixed forest of beech, oak, willow and maple.
The Lottenbacher Teich is part of the pond complex of the botanical garden of the Ruhr University Bochum. Actually, this pond is already a water lily pond, but they only bloom for 4-5 days. The Lottental is also known for the large variety of amphibian species - toads and salamanders, water frogs, common toads and newts can be found here.

"... The Lottental green corridor characterizes the south-west of Bochum in the districts of Stiepel and Querenburg. The valley is traversed in a west-east direction by the waters known as the Stiepeler Bach, then Lottenbach, which is around 3.5 km long at the Kemnader See flows into the Ruhr or the Oelbach, its tributaries being the Voßkuhlbach and Kalwesbach.
The valley is sparsely populated and is characterized by pastures and mixed oak and beech forest.
The Lottental is known for its amphibians, including water frogs, common toads, smooth newts, mountain newts and fire salamanders. Bird species include tawny owl, great spotted woodpecker, green woodpecker and lesser woodpecker.
