The abbey of Viboldone is located in Viboldone, a hamlet of the city of San Giuliano Milanese, in the province of Milan. For the beauty of its architecture and its fourteenth-century frescoes, it is one of the most important medieval complexes in Lombardy.
The abbey was founded in 1176 and completed in 1348 by the Humiliati, a religious order made up of monks, nuns and lay people who, around the current church, led a life of prayer and work. The date of 1348 is shown on a plaque placed to the right of the main entrance door. In Viboldone, the activity of the Humiliati was particularly directed towards the manufacture of woolen clothes and the cultivation of the fields with absolutely innovative processing systems, such as to make the abbey one of the most important centers of the aforementioned religious order after the church of Santa Mary of Brera.
