Mountain Biking Highlight
Another spot on the Schwaneyer Panoramaweg:
The Happenberg, with a steep southern slope to the Ellertal, is spoken in Low German "Happmach".Up here on the mountain, hops were cultivated in the early Middle Ages. Because "Happenberg" is a derivative of the earlier name "Hoppenberg / Hopfenberg". For the durability and the aroma of the beer brew to taste the hops was loved and needed even then. The Hopfenberg at Schwaney is already mentioned in 1384. In a doubly sealed document of 1384 at the Paderborn cathedral chapter reads: "The Hopfenberg, Johan Mosenhard belonging, is freed from tithe by the cathedral chapter" cf. StAM Domkapitel Capsule 33, No. 62.Until the end of the 16th century, one knew in the Schwaneyer and Paderborn country a special hollow measure, the "Hoppenscheffel". Thus it is written in a document read: "the city had the Hoppenscheppel, with which the citizens of hops was measured" cf. Judge, Paderb. I 167.
