THE OLD URBAN HOSPITAL
The old hospital, or "home", was built in 1768 on the orders of Duke Emmanuel-Théodose de la Tour d'Auvergne. The city's citizens had asked him forty years earlier to give social protection to the poorest of the city. Although it was definitely not his own style, Architekt Laurent Dewez created this massive and imposing structure. Until 1855, the elderly, invalids and orphans were taken care of by nuns.
