THE POST « LA POULIE »
This building from the end of the 17th century, along with some other fortifications, has been preserved from the time of Vauban. In addition to the nine fortified towers flanking the corners of the fortress wall, the famous military architect had built a gate and niche on this site called « La Poulie ». This provided the people who lived downstream with a passage to get into the city. The horses of the cavalry barracks could also come to drink in the Semois via this road. At the beginning of the 20th century, when people still crossed the Semois by boat, the small dilapidated building was called « the house of the Ferryman ». He lived there with his family. Later, in the 1950s, the caretaker of the municipal slaughterhouse, which was housed in the « bastion de Bourgogne », lived in the « Poulie ». Now the building is waiting to be classified and renovated.
