Up until after World War II, the Grenzlandring was one of the fastest road racing circuits for automobiles in Europe and the world. To this day, the former oval can still be seen despite some traffic light crossings that have been built in over the past few decades. These international races, which are comparable in importance to today's Formula 1, came to an abrupt end and attracted tens of thousands of spectators to Wegberg in 1952, exactly 70 years ago. In a terrible accident, a racing car drove into the largely unsecured spectators at practically top speed. Numerous deaths and even more injuries were to be lamented. A memorial stone was erected at the site of the accident a few years ago. Location: From the traffic light junction with the turn-off to Klinkum, looking north, after about 300m on the right side of the inner lane of the ring road.
