St. Nicholas Church is the only one of the 3 main churches that remained intact during World War II. The church essentially shapes the skyline of Wismar. The impressive three-aisled sacred building was built between 1381 and 1487 as a church for sailors and fishermen. The style is associated with late Gothic. With a main nave of 37 m, it is one of the largest churches in Central Europe. Its tower measures 120 meters high. In 1703, a storm destroyed the top of the church tower, which in turn led to numerous destruction of the interior of the church. In the 18th century, the destroyed parts were replaced by Baroque elements. Even today, the church is used as a prayer house.
