Tips

The Prussian port in Lünen on the Datteln-Hamm Canal was opened in 1925 and served as a coal port until the 1990s. After the last colliery was closed, it was converted into a resting place for water hikers and for use by leisure and sports boats, and a canal promenade and harbor house were added. An approx. 70m long and approx. 11m wide investment platform can be used for this. This is also suitable for canoes and small boats. The large coal loading crane "Mohr-Kran" from 1962 now serves as an industrial monument. Food and drinks are offered in the harbor house.

At the Prussian port there is also a booth with homemade meatballs, which are also really tasty. You can also sit there and look at the boats and the canal. We like being there and enjoy taking a break there.

This is where Hans and Franz meet. A worthwhile place for a short break. Definitely eat currywurst fries red and white ☝️Or one of the divine matjes rolls 🤩

The Prussian port originally served as a transshipment point for the Preußen collieries in Horstmar and the Gneisenau colliery in Dortmund-Derne. Its heyday as a coal transshipment point began in 1925, and the port was expanded to its current dimensions in the mid-1960s. From the end of the 1980s it lost its importance due to the mine closures. On the former colliery connection railway there is now the "Gneisenau-Trasse" cycle and hiking trail, which leads past the Preußenhalde, on the other side of the railway line, to Derne.

Halfway through the projected route, a welcome break with a great snack. I am enthusiastic about the specialty "Emdener Matjesbrötchen".
