The gable painting "Øresundstolden" dates from 2012 and was made by Lara Atzori and Piercarlo Carella.

The painting tells of a great time when merchants, shipbuilders, ferrymen, craftsmen, skippers and seafarers from all over the world created life in the city. All ships that came through Øresund were supposed to pay a fee to the king and later to the state. In this way, Helsingør became a rich and vibrant city during the 400 years that the sound toll was levied.

The artists have composed an image based on facts and free imagination. The painting shows both the king, the newly built Kronborg and the herring barrel as a sign of the rich herring catch.

The Øresund Customs made Hesingør famous throughout Europe. Perhaps this is why William Shakespeare set his most famous drama, Hamlet, in Elsinore.
