The origin of the late Romanesque church is due to 1903/04 exposed remains of medieval paintings, which are in stylistic and temporal proximity to the Brunswick cathedral frescoes, dated to the 3rd decade of the 13th century. The first written mention was made in 1237. The frescoes were hidden behind canvas for protection, to which the court painter Adolf Quensen had applied additional paintings. The north wall shows scenes from the life of St. Nicholas, the south wall from the life of Jesus. The Melveroder Nikolaikirche corresponds, with its transversal Turmriegel and the three-aisled, arched pillar construction with choir square, Hauptapsis and two Nebenapsiden, the origin type of the Eastphalian village churches. Noteworthy are a double-stepped column portal on the south side and a connecting door to a former maiden monastery on the north side.
