One of the traditional attractions of the Lombard cultural city of Bergamo is the Funicolare Città Alta. Since the end of the 19th century, the funicular has been running from the lower town to the upper town with its historic center. The first funicular was built by Italian engineer Alessandro Ferretti. The railway line begins in the lower town on Viale Vittorio Emanuele and ends in the southern upper town in Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe. The two wagons have to overcome a height difference of 85 meters on the railway line and transport 50 people each. In 1987, the funicular railway was last modernized to mark the 100th anniversary of the means of transport. The historic rail link is still popular with both locals and tourists, as it is fast and reasonably priced. A second funicular goes from the upper town to the hill San Vigilio. Until the early 1990s, the railway was extensively renewed and is especially popular with tourists. From the fort you have a great view over the city and the surrounding area. Parts of the historic 15th-18th century fortifications can be explored along the castle.urlaubsziele.com/sehenswuerdigkeiten/871
