The Faro do Penedo da Saudade is located on the Atlantic coast of São Pedro de Moel, in the district of Leiria, Portugal. This lighthouse, built in 1912, stands on a cliff that gives it its name. The quadrangular stone and masonry tower is 32 meters high and is equipped with a spiral staircase.

The lighthouse was automated in 1980 and its light, which originally ran on oil vapor, now uses a 1000 watt lamp. 😊

The Penedo da Saudade Lighthouse is located on the Atlantic coast in São Pedro de Moel, Leiria District, Portugal. The working lighthouse was built in 1912 and takes its name from the cliff on which it is erected. The square tower is made of stone and masonry walls covered with brick tiles and contains a spiral staircase. It is 32 metres high and the base is 55 metres above sea level. The site was chosen about halfway between the Berlenga Lighthouse to the south and the Cabo Mondego Lighthouse to the north. Originally identified as necessary during a survey in 1866, the site was not officially established until 1902 and construction did not begin until 1909. The Penedo da Saudade Lighthouse began operations on February 15, 1912. At that time it was equipped with a rotating 3rd lighthouse and the light was powered by oil steam.

From March 1916 to December 1919 the light was extinguished due to World War I. From March to July 1921 it was also inactive as the lighting system was changed to the new Cape Mondego lighthouse and was replaced by another 3rd order device. At this time some improvements were also made to the tower and further modifications were made in 1937.

In 1947 generators were installed which required the construction of an engine house. In 1950 aircraft panels were added. The lighthouse was not connected to the public electricity grid until 1980 when an automation system was also installed. In 1947 the white lamp had a power of 6000 watts but was gradually reduced to a power of 1000 watts. In 1983 technical difficulties arose due to damage from a thunderstorm. The lighthouse can be visited on Wednesday afternoons.
