The now completed U4 line leads from the HafenCity University stop, coming out of the tunnel in a wide arc towards Elbe and above ground to the new stop, which also spans Zweibrückenstrasse. The platform hall is built in a north-south orientation, thus offering the technical prerequisites for an extension of the U4 to the Kleine Grasbrook and is vaulted by a spectacular roof with a height of almost 16 meters.
A total of three levels in the hall offer access to the trains, the possibility of crossing the tracks and the connection to the future S-Bahn station. The barrier-free stop has 4 entrances, 2 elevators, 5 escalators, a kiosk and the latest passenger information systems.
With its curved arches and futuristic glass roof, the stop offers its passengers a lot of light, wide views and a lot of views of the Elbe. Because the HOCHBAHN has integrated a viewing platform right on the water.

The Freihafenelbbrücke was built in 1916-1917 and 1926, since a structurally separate crossing of the Elbe was necessary for the free port for road traffic. The 471 m long bridge adjoins directly to the railway bridge.

    Endangered landmark Freihafen-Elbbrücke
The Freihafen-Elbbrücke was built in 1926 and is unique with its special construction (truss arch support with drawstring, so-called "German bows", with two storeys). The entire bridge ensemble even has a national historical significance for technical, traffic and urban planning reasons. For the bridge, a particularly good steel quality was used, in addition, the construction should still have large, unused static potentials. The expert for historical steel structures Werner Lorenz of the TU Cottbus has therefore also stated in an opinion that the bridge can be very well preserved.

The provisional new terminus of subway line 4 is being built directly on the Elbe. The end of the station is a viewing platform above the Elbe. The opening is planned for the end of 2018.

I like old steel bridges. Even the thought of the construction without a computer or just a calculator makes such bridges special.

The next section of the U4 underground line to the new Elbbrücken stop was opened on December 6, 2018, right on schedule. A spectacular view of the Elbphilharmonie, Michel and Elbe awaits here.

So, off to HafenCity! Hamburg's district on the Elbe has long since become a tourist magnet and home to many Hamburgers. Also thanks to the connection to the city center via the underground line U4. Now, with the 1.3 kilometer extension of the U4 from the previous terminus HafenCity University to the Elbe bridges, the HOCHBAHN connects the east of the district.

At the moment, the area around the underground station is still under construction. But it should be finished in December. The next project on the other side is the S-Bahn station Elbbrücke. It is said to be connected with a glass tube to the Elbbrücke underground station.

Since December 2018, there is another futuristic station on Hamburg's U4 underground line. The route was extended to the Elbbrücken and ends there now. In the future, there should also be a new S-Bahn station, so that there can be changed over a glass connecting passage. The station was built in a spectacular glazed metal construction. At the opening in December 2018, a widely visible light show (see photos) was held in the station on the first three days.

From the Freihafenelbbrücke you have this beautiful view down the river.
The construction fields of Hafencity are getting closer and will arrive here in 2025/27.

The U4 train station ends at the Hamburg Elbbrücken. It is worth seeing and a beautiful vantage point in the port of Hamburg with the Elbphilharmonie.
