De Groote Peel has extensive water surfaces that were created by former peat extraction, in addition to unexcavated peat areas that are mainly covered with straw. Typical raised bog habitats are only present in fragments. There are still large undisturbed wetlands that are important as a resting place for cranes, white-fronted geese and curlews, among others. During the breeding season and bird migration times, the paths to the bog are closed. On the southern edge, near the village of Ospel, there is a visitor center from which several plank paths run along the peat edge. The central peat area is only accessible to visitors via some paths and outside breeding and migration times.
