At a height of 38 meters, the Cathedral of St. Mary and Cäcilia tower over all other buildings in the old town of Verden an der Aller. The Gothic cathedral is the landmark of the city of Verden.
The city's landmark is the Cathedral of St. Mary and Cecilia of 1490, which towers over the surrounding houses of the old town. At the site of today's church building were formerly two wooden churches. However, both fell victim to the fire. The first burned down at 850, the second at 950.
At the beginning of the 11th century, the first stone church was built. Just as its successor built at the end of the twelfth century, this church also became a robbery of flames.
The present cathedral, Mariae et Ceciliae, was built in two phases. The first extends over the period from 1290 to 1323. Only after a break of 150 years was the construction finally completed between 1473 and 1490. Architectural features include the 38-meter-high side and center naves, as well as the tower, which still dates from an earlier 12th-century basilica. The choir room on the east side of the cathedral once had seven colorful stained glass windows, which the pirate Klaus Störtebeker donated to the church in 1402.

The cathedral is a hall church with probably the oldest hallway choir in Germany. The cathedral is architecturally inspired by the Cathedral of Reims and the Minden Cathedral. He was also a role model for various churches, including the St. John's Church in Lüneburg and the cathedral in Lübeck.Among the objects of special mention are the baptismal font from the 13th century, the magnificent Levite chair of the cathedral, a gravestone of Bishop Berthold von Landesbergen, who was responsible for the last section of the cathedral, and two sarcophagi in the back of the cathedral ,
During a renovation in 1829 under the direction of master builder Leo Bergmann, Renaissance and Baroque alterations were removed and the cathedral was regaled in a romantic spirit. For the choir, a neo-Gothic high altar was created.

    Störtebeker and the Lätare donation
Legend has it that buccaneer Klaus Störtebeker left a treasure to the city of Verden shortly before his execution in 1401. For this purpose, she was to distribute 530 black breads and 1,600 salted herring every year to the needy, civil servants and clergy. Even today, the food is served on Monday after Lätare Sunday in the middle of Lent.
