Hiking Highlight
The historic center of Dresden is located on the left bank of the Elbe, at the top of a graceful river arch. Protected for centuries by mighty fortress walls, the Saxon residence unfolded splendor and activity here.
The buildings from the Renaissance, Baroque and 19th centuries still determine the face of our city, the Elbe front.
Seen from the other side of the river, Dresden shows itself at first glance to be a cultural city of European standing.
The reconstruction of the city center finds its best-known symbol in the Dresden Frauenkirche, the magnificent baroque domed building that is once again shaping the skyline of Dresden.
Many important cultural institutions can be found along the banks of the Elbe in the old town: from the Old Masters Picture Gallery to the treasury of the Saxon electors and kings, the Green Vault.
The old town is also the center of city life: the fate of Saxony is determined in the Saxon state parliament, and that of the city in the town hall. Shopping centers and restaurants, culture and work can be found around Altmarkt and Prager Straße.dresden.de/de/tourismus/sehen/sehenswuerdheiten/altstadt.php

The district is on the left side of the Elbe and stretches from the Elbe on the Terrassenufer in the north to the town hall in the south. The district is delimited by the location of the old Dresden fortifications, which were removed at the beginning of the 19th century. This location is still recognizable in many places today thanks to the ring that was provided with green areas after 1945 (a street system consisting of Wallstrasse / Marienstraße, Dr.-Külz-Ring / Waisenhausstrasse and Ringstrasse / St. Petersburger Strasse).

Tip for families - a city tour with a difference, so it's also fun for the children: a scavenger hunt with riddles through Dresden, past all the important sights of the old town. Available on the Internet at stadtspiel-schnitzeljagd.de and in a shop in Dresden (more details on the website).
The set costs around 30, - but is worth every penny! Our son thought it was great that he was able to lead us from one point to the other using the solved puzzles and we enjoyed the small private city tour.
